Map Reading & Navigation Skills for Women - Beginner friendly (Level 1)

This friendly, hands-on course is designed for women who want to take control of their own adventures, learn essential navigation skills, and feel more independent outdoors.
Set in the beautiful woodlands and rolling hills of the Ashridge Estate, you’ll join a small, supportive group and learn step-by-step alongside other women.
Your Instructor:
I’m Erika – an NNAS-qualified navigation tutor, outdoor first aider, and member of search and rescue with over 6 years’ experience leading women’s walks. My goal is to create a relaxed, encouraging space where you can build confidence while having fun.When & Where:

- Read and understand OS maps, including key symbols, scales, and rights of way
- Plan and follow a walking route using paths, tracks, and landmarks
- Line up your map with the landscape so it makes sense at a glance
- Use a compass for the basics – to keep yourself on track
- Estimate distance and timing for a walk using simple pacing and time checks
- Spot “checkpoints” (like woods, road crossings, or churches) to confirm you’re on the right path
- Use natural features (like rivers, ridges, or valleys) to avoid overshooting your route
- Gain the confidence to enjoy walks without relying solely on your phoneThis is about building skills step by step, in a relaxed women-only group, where you can ask questions, practice together, and celebrate progress as you go.
What to Bring
- OS Active Map 181 & compass (provided, but bring your own if you have them)
- Notepad & pen for notes
- This course will go ahead in all weather, so dress appropriately. Always carry a waterproof jacket.
- Check the forecast and bring sun cream, a hat, or sunglasses for warm days, and waterproofs, a warm hat, and gloves for cold or wet days. (I recommend bringing extra layers as will not be walking as much as you would on a hike)
- Wear trousers or leggings to reduce the risk of tick bites and nettle stings. Avoid denim or cotton.
- Sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential. Open-toe shoes are unsuitable.
- Bring at least 1.5 litres of water, lunch, and snacks, as there may be no opportunities to buy food or drinks along the route.

Wild Heaths & Hidden Trails – Chobham Common Circular Hike (18 km)
Sunningdale station, London Road, Sunningdale, Ascot, West Berkshire, SL5 0EL, GBStep into the wild side of Surrey on this 18 km circular hike, setting out from Sunningdale to explore the sweeping heathlands, hidden trails, and big skies of Chobham Common — the largest National Nature Reserve in the south-east of England.
This is a landscape of rare beauty and unique wildlife, where sandy paths weave between heather, gorse, and silver birch, and open ridges offer far-reaching views.

- Grade: 3 – ChallengingThe Hike:
From Sunningdale Station, we strike out across varied countryside before reaching the vast wilderness of Chobham Common. This is one of the UK’s most important lowland heath reserves, home to Dartford warblers, woodlarks, adders, and colourful dragonflies in late summer.We’ll follow undulating sandy tracks and winding woodland paths, with a mix of wide-open heathland and sheltered sections under oak and birch. The route also takes us into quieter farmland and secluded valleys near Albury Bottom, before looping back across the common for a final stretch through big-sky heath and back to Sunningdale.
Highlights:
- Chobham Common: Rare lowland heath — wild, open, and full of character.

Ivinghoe Beacon & The Ridgeway – 16 km Circular Hike - 16km - Chilterns AONB
Tring Station, 112 Station Rd, Tring Station, Tring HP23 5QR,, London, GBJoin us for a spectacular day exploring one of the most iconic corners of the Chiltern Hills – the Ivinghoe Ridgeway. This route combines sweeping ridge-top views, rolling chalk downland, and peaceful woodland trails, with a mix of climbs and descents that make it a rewarding day out.

From Tring Station we head onto the ancient Ridgeway National Trail, often described as Britain’s oldest road, with over 5,000 years of history as a route for travellers, herdsmen and traders. Our walk takes us up onto Ivinghoe Beacon, a dramatic hilltop and former Iron Age hillfort, with far reaching views across the Vale of Aylesbury.
We’ll then follow the ridge across open chalk downs, circling through Pitstone Hill and the surrounding commons. These areas are teeming with birdlife – kestrels, red kites and buzzards are often seen soaring overhead. The mix of broad ridge walking, grassy tracks and peaceful woodland paths makes this a classic Chilterns adventure.

Autumn in the White Peaks & Dales - Peak District National Park - 4 Days
Parson Field Car Park, SK170BE, Hartington, GBJoin us for a 4-day Peak District escape exploring the softer, limestone landscapes of the White Peak, a land of peaceful riverside trails, dramatic valley walls, rolling green hills, and timeless stone villages.
This trip is all about variety, from the iconic beauty of Dovedale to the quiet charm of Wolfscote Dale, the sweeping moorland views above Eyam, and the gentle riverside paths of Youlgreave. November is a magical time to explore this area, with crisp autumn air, colourful foliage, and quieter trails.
We’ll be based at Ilam Hall YHA, perfectly placed for our walks, with comfortable rooms and social spaces to relax after a day outdoors. Evenings will be spent enjoying hearty food in local pubs.

Overall Grade: 3 / 5 – Moderate - Challenging with varied terrain Suitable for walkers with a reasonable fitness level. Includes some hill climbs and uneven ground.Day 1 – Hartington, Wolfscote & Biggin Dale
9.6 km | 214 m ascent | ~3 hrs | Grade 2/5
We’ll meet in the picturesque village of Hartington before setting off along the clear waters of the River Dove. The path winds through the steep-sided limestone gorge of Wolfscote Dale, with its dramatic rock faces and peaceful atmosphere, before continuing into the quieter, more open Biggin Dale. A gentle introduction to the White Peak, giving us time to chat, take in the views, and settle into the weekend.Day 2 – Eyam & Sir William Hill

Starting in the historic plague village of Eyam, this route combines fascinating history with big open landscapes. We’ll climb steadily to the moorlands around Sir William Hill, where sweeping views stretch across the Peak District, then follow ridge-top paths and gritstone edges. The return journey takes us through farmland and quiet lanes back to Eyam, where you can explore the village’s story.Day 3 – Dovedale & Milldale from Ilam
16.9 km | 470 m ascent | ~5.5 hrs | Grade 3/5
A classic Peak District walk right from our doorstep. We’ll cross rolling fields to the iconic Dovedale stepping stones, then follow the River Dove through towering limestone cliffs, woodland, and open meadows. The route leads us to the picture-perfect hamlet of Milldale before looping back via higher ground for panoramic valley views. This is the White Peak at its most photogenic — perfect for capturing those autumn colours.Day 4 – Youlgreave Circuit
10.5 km | 247 m ascent | ~3 hrs | Grade 2/5
Our final day’s walk is a gentle circuit through the beautiful Bradford Dale and surrounding countryside. The route follows a crystal-clear river past stone bridges and along grassy banks before climbing gradually to open fields edged by drystone walls. It’s a peaceful, relaxed way to finish the trip, with plenty of time for goodbyes before heading home.Accommodation:
We’ll be staying at Ilam Hall YHA, a striking gothic-style building set within 84 acres of National Trust parkland.Our group will have exclusive use of cosy bunk rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom.
