What we’re about

Abi’s Banned & Burned Book Club is a sanctuary for free thinkers, inspired by Kate Lindley’s Banned Book Nook and the belief that literature should challenge, not be censored. We read books that have been banned or challenged, exploring why they provoke such reactions and what they reveal about society, history, and ourselves.

We stand with the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) in defending the First Amendment and the right of libraries to provide unrestricted access to information. Founded in 1969, FTRF fights to protect readers, librarians, and authors from censorship, ensuring that all voices—especially the uncomfortable ones—are heard.

Books shape minds, inspire change, and push boundaries. By reading what others have tried to silence, we reclaim the right to think for ourselves. Join us in exploring banned and burned books—because the most dangerous ideas are often the ones most worth reading.

Shadows of Responsibility: The Night Watchman

This month, one of the books (yes, there's another) we'll gather around is Louise Erdrich’s The Night Watchman, a novel that illuminates not only the story of one man’s determination but also the larger truth of what happens when a nation seeks to erase entire peoples under the guise of “policy.”

Based on the life of Erdrich’s grandfather, the book transports us into the world of 1950s Turtle Mountain, where Indigenous families confront the federal government’s relentless push for “termination”—a policy designed to strip Native nations of their sovereignty, dissolve tribal lands, and sever cultural lifelines. In prose both tender and unflinching, Erdrich shows us what it means to resist dispossession, and how survival often demands both political battle and personal sacrifice.
