United Animal Friends

You've mastered good manners in class—now it's time to take those skills into the real world! AKC Urban CGC requires that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a setting that includes traffic, crowds, noises, smells and other distractions that are present in a city or town.

REQUIREMENTS: Dogs must be 6 months of age or older and hold the CGC title. If your dog was not evaluated by Sammi for the CGC, email a copy of the AKC certificate to sammimaon@gmail.com

FEES: Cost is $10 per dog and paid before the test begins.

✅Urban CGC Test Items Include:

1. Exit/enter doorway with no pulling in dog-friendly buildings.
2. Walk through a crowd on a busy urban sidewalk.
3. Appropriate reaction to city distractions. This includes movement, noises, and walking on a variety of surfaces.
4. Crossing street: Stop at corner, stand or sit to wait and cross with no pulling (on leash, with owner). Crosses street under control.
5. Ignore food on sidewalk. (Dropped food, or cups, bags, cans, in which food was wrapped).
6. Person walks up and pets the dog.
7. Down stay (3 min) in lobby or outdoor area, or waits while owner has a meal or snack.
8. Stairs, steps, or elevator under control.
9. Housetrained for apartment, condo, city living. Owner may verify this item.
10. Transportation. Owner’s choice depending on transportation needs.

• Flat buckle or snap collar
• Martingale (limited slip) collar (non-corrective)
• Non-restrictive harnesses (must not tighten or pinch)
• 6' leash

❌ Prohibited Equipment

• Prong collars
• Choke chains
• Slip leash
• Electric or vibrating collars
• Head halters
• Retractable leash
• Any corrective devices

📋Notable Rules

• No food, treats or toys; praise is ok
• Dogs who urinate or defecate in an inappropriate place (e.g., lobby of a building) during testing will not pass
• OK to speak to your dog during testing

📜 Earn the AKC CGCU Title!
Dogs who pass can apply to receive an official certificate from the AKC and can proudly add "CGCU" to their name.

Limited to 6 dogs. Each dog will be evaluated individually, but not necessarily in a set order. Since the test takes place in a public environment, we will use naturally occurring distractions—such as noises, passersby, and other real-life situations—as part of the evaluation while walking as a group. Please plan to stay for the full hour so everyone has the opportunity to test, and join us afterward for a group photo celebrating our newest title holders! If spots fill up, a waitlist will be started and another CGCU test will be scheduled soon.
