ABOUT THE SIERRA CLUB:
John Muir co-founded the Sierra Club in 1892 to share his love of nature. Since then, the Club has matured into the nation's largest and most influential environmental organization. The Club’s mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's resources; and to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the environment.
The Ventana Chapter serves Santa Cruz and Monterey counties of central California and hosts numerous outings, conservation actions, and ways to get involved. The Santa Cruz Group serves Sierra Club members in Santa Cruz County and was originally formed in 1966 as part of the Loma Prieta Chapter. In October 1974, the Santa Cruz Group became part of the Ventana Chapter. Information about the Santa Cruz Group is on our web site at http://ventana.sierraclub.org/santacruz/

Santa Cruz County’s public lands and parks are a vital and heavily utilized resource for visitors and residents alike, hosting thousands of users every year. They also provide crucial protected habitat for wild species, like the Monarch butterflies which visit urban areas like Moran Lake County Park and Natural Bridges every fall during their yearly migration, and the endangered Ben Lomond spineflower found in the rural sandhills of Quail Hollow County Park. These places are a cherished part of our neighborhoods and communities, but what makes these public lands function as shared natural spaces is often overlooked. As conservation advocates and Sierra Club volunteers, we’d like to bring some attention to these important resources.
We’re pleased to announce the formation of a new Sierra Club Santa Cruz Public Lands Subcommittee. This subcommittee of the Conservation Committee will focus on the public lands and parks of Santa Cruz County, including both city and county areas. We will be attending meetings of the County and City Parks Commissions, connecting with city and county electeds and staff to address concerns, providing information and educational resources to our Ventana Chapter members, and actively tracking and responding to issues affecting our public lands.
Santa Cruz County and Monterey County members encouraged to attend.
We will happily extend the focus of the Committee to public lands in Monterey County if there is sufficient participation and support from Monterey County members.
