THE HIKE
At the northwest end of the parking area, you will see a yellow blaze of the Hoeferlin Memorial Trail, as well as a triple red-and-white blaze, which marks the terminus of the Skyline Connector Trail. You will be returning to the parking area on the Skyline Connector Trail, but the Hoeferlin Trail will be your route for the first part of the hike.
Head into the woods and immediately turn left, following the yellow blazes, then bear right onto a footpath parallel to a gravel road. After passing a small pond on the right, follow the yellow blazes as they briefly turn right onto the road this portion of the road is paved), then turn left onto another wood’s road. After passing an interesting rock outcrop on the right, you'll come to a Y-intersection, where the yellow-blazed trail bears right and begins to descend.
Soon, the gravel road briefly reappears to the right, but bear left to stay on the yellow-blazed trail, which follows a rocky woods road over undulating terrain. The road eventually narrows to a footpath and crosses an intermittent stream. After descending on a winding route and once again briefly approaching the gravel road, the Hoeferlin Trail heads down to a wood's road-the route of the blue-blazed MacEvoy Trail. Turn right, now following both yellow and blue blazes. Soon, the trail bears left and descends a short pitch to the dam of Ramapo Lake (just to the left). Here, the blue-blazed MacEvoy Trail continues ahead onto North Shore Drive, but you should turn left and follow the yellow-blazed Hoeferlin Memorial Trail, which crosses the concrete dam and spillway.
About 100 feet beyond the dam, the red-blazed Lookout Trail begins on the left. Turn left onto the Lookout Trail, which heads away from the lake, following a rocky footpath along a stream.
Soon, the trail bears right and begins a steady climb up the ridge. Near the crest of the rise, the trail levels off and passes a huge boulder on the left.
A short distance beyond, the trail turns sharply right. Continue along the trail as it meanders up and down, sometimes steeply, for less than a mile to a T-junction with the yellow-blazed Hoeferlin Memorial Trail. The hike continues by turning right and following the joint Lookout/Hoeferlin Memorial Trail (yellow and red blazes). However, before continuing, take a moment to wander over to the left of the junction.
This is a particularly scenic place to rest—a large rock ledge with a splendid pitch pine and a nice view across the Wyanokies.
Return to the trail, follow the yellow and red blazes across the ridge, and begin the descent back down to the lake.
You'll pass several more viewpoints, with Ramapo Lake getting closer and looking more serene as you reach each spot.
When you reach the lake where the Lookout Trail ends), turn right along the road and walk back across the dam. If you would like to shorten the hike, turn right and follow the yellow blazes back to your car. Otherwise, turn left and follow the blue MacEvoy Trail blazes along the lakeshore. You'll pass a large house on the right. A short distance beyond, a rock outcrop on the left offers a broad view over the lake.
Soon, you'll reach a junction where the red/white-blazed Skyline Connector Trail begins on the left. Turn left and follow this red/white trail along a footpath roughly parallel to Skyline Drive until you reach the parking area where the hike began.
