What we’re about
Mountain Cathedrals is a group for people who would like to encounter God and build community in our sacred outdoor wilderness spaces. As we join together for monthly day hikes on the third Saturday of each month, we will build elements of worship (scripture, prayer, and Holy Communion) into the hiking experience, allowing our ancient Christian traditions and our current hiking and outdoor spaces to work together to point to the presence of God among us.
Mountain Cathedrals is a ministry of St. John's United Methodist Church, and hikes will be led by a United Methodist clergyperson. We are, however, committed to building community and connections across denominational lines, and as such, we are open and sensitive to the faith traditions and backgrounds of all participants.
Mountain Cathedrals is a re-birth of the former Worship in the Wilderness meetup.

See all- Mountain Cathedrals + SJ Youth Group August Moonlight Hike - Tecolote PeakSt. John's United Methodist Church (meet in east parking lot to carpool to trailhead), Albuquerque, NM
The firmament is as present now as it was in Biblical times, although it seems we pay far less attention to it now. Let us set aside an evening to gaze at it and wonder, share stories about it, contemplate Scripture, share Communion, and watch the moonrise from Tecolote Peak (near the base of the Sandia Ski Area).
Meet at the St. John's UMC (Albuquerque) east parking lot at 6:45 p.m., or at the trailhead (Google Maps: Tecolote Trailhead) at 7:30. Plan to be back at the parking area by 9:45 and St. John's by 10:15. The hike is easy to moderate (2.4 miles, 318 feet elevation gain), but it includes some rocky trail. Bring headlamps/flashlights, a snack, a parka, stories, and enthusiasm!
Please join us for this hike of meditation, wilderness, and time apart from our normal schedules.
Contact Mike Furnish at (505) 440-7292 or mdfurnish@comcast.net, or Brett Reece at youthdirector@stjohns-abq.org with questions.
Save the date: The next Mountain Cathedrals hikes will be September 13 (Palizo Canyon Goblin Colony in the Jemez) and October 18 (location TBD - please send suggestions!).
